Galtee Mountains

The Galtee mountain range overlooks the Glen of Aherlow on its north side. Looking south & southeast respectively, you can see the Knockmealdowns and the Comeraghs, provided it’s a clear day. The Galtees are located in the counties of Tipperary and Limerick, with Galtymore (the highest peak) marking the border.

The mountains, and particularly Galtymore, are regularly enveloped in fog. From the perspective of my front window in the Glen, Galtymore towers behind Cush, a little to the right, almost as if peering over the shoulder of its miniature companion. It doesn’t make an appearance every day, however, as it often enjoys its own microclimate of low cloud and gloom.

The mountains loom over the Glen in a manner that feels both domineering and protective, and it is this juxtaposition that I’m interested in. The enclosure of a mountain range cuts me off from the outside world, but I feel safe and comforted nonetheless.

The first image on this page shows Galtymore almost completely shrouded in fog.

The second image shows Cush, overlooking the Glen of Aherlow.
