The Copper Coast

“The Copper Coast” is a stretch of beautiful coastline in County Waterford. It owes its name to the copper mining industry that flourished there in the 19th century. The name may also refer to the red or brownish colour of many of the sedimentary rocks found there.

The unusual geological formations along this coastline are the result of volcanic activity and, subsequently, 460 million years of evolution. This gives the coastline a dramatic, jagged look in some places. In 2004, it became a UNESCO Global Geopark.

The images above show both the sharp-toothed coastline and the serene ocean beyond it.
